Angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) is a key component of renin-angiotensin system(RAS).It converts angiotensin I(Ang I) into angiotensin II(Ang II),a pluripotent signaling peptide. In contrast to renin, another key enzyme of RAS,ACE is more promiscuous in its substrate specificity.Angiotensin I and bradykinin are well-known physiological substrates, whereas ACE also cleaves substance P,AcSDKP,β-endorphins,and several other peptides.Perhaps because of this variety of substrates,ACE affects many physiological processes including blood pressure, hematopoiesis, and fertility.Recently,a large number of studies have revealed that ACE is involved in skin function.ACE appears to be a critical regulator in controlling cutaneous inflammatory response,as well as affecting pigmentation, cell survival and tissue regeneration.Emerging evidence has suggested that ACE plays a role in the context of stem cell regulation. This review mainly summarized the evidences for the potential role of angiotensin-converting enzyme in wound repair and regeneration.
