As key notions in the fields of philosophy and cognitive linguistics, "metaphor" and "idiom" have attracted scholars' attention and have been discussed frequently in the works concerned here and there. By virtue of clarifying their definitions and interlocked relations, some significant issues in philosophy and cognitive linguistics could be uncovered. This essay aims at exploring the following questions by comparing metaphors and idioms: 1 ) Are metaphors and idioms decomposable? 2) Can metaphors function as the fundamental mechanism in idiomatic interpretation? 3 ) Is idiom a dead metaphor in nature? 4) Are there any possibilities to get them paraphrased and translated?
