Joan is the main character in Henry Rider Haggard' s novel Joan Haste, which was translated into Chinese by Lin Shu and Wei Yi in the late Qing Dynasty. Lin' s version then triggered instant arguments concerning its moral discourse. Today, Joan, depicted by Lin Shu, is regarded as a unique character possessing both Chinese traditional female virtues and the independence of western women. By closely examining Lin' s version vis-a-vis its English original from the perspective of Lin' s rhetorical manipulation, this article reveals the true image of Joan in Lin' s version and further probes into the nature of misinterpretation in translation.
