张星烺是我国20世纪上半叶史学界著名的学者，以汇编中西交通史料而享有盛誉。他的《中西交通史料汇编》首次汇集了当时相关的主要资料和重要成果，并对中西交通史进行了比较全面的考察和研究。该书收集资料丰富，整理方法较为科学，考释精详，为我国中外关系史学科奠定了基础，是这一学科体系建立的重要标志之一。

Zhang Xinglang is famous for collecting the meterials of the history of Sino-foreign communications. It is the first time that A Compilation of the Historical Resources of Communication between China and the West treats Sino-foreign communications as a unity and push on its studies in an all-around way, in which the main materials and achievements at that time were collected. What＇s more, the author testified and commented them one by one as well. As for the style and methods, the author compiled the materials in a far-to-near way, showing a new research trend of Sino-foreign relation history with Chinese characteristics. The methods such as ＂ the Sino-foreign history materials comparing and collating each other＂ set a good example for later scholars. It lays a solid foundation for the study of Sinoforeign communications history, becoming one of the important symbols in the establishment of this subject.
