China has set the scene for a big change in the dynamics of global trade with the decision,announced late in June,to revalue its currency.For years the new economic powerhouse has been under pressure from the United States and other G20 nations to allow its currency to appreciate.This would give China greater purchasing power to buy imported goods while making Chinese exports more expensive.Australian companies trading with China will feel the impact of this change.However,Citigroup's Hong Kong-based chief Asia economist,Johanna Chua,believes the size of the currency appreciation will be small.
