Anthony Trollope, Dickens' s contemporary in the golden age of English fiction, is defined as a social problem novelist. Trollope' s Barcbester Tower is notable for the author' s authentic presentation of clerical careers and power conflicts between characters. Assisted by Network Exchange theory, the present study probes into the effects of the overall structure of the hierarchy of achievement on each member who is facing competition for upward mobility. The study applies " structural power" and " mechanism of obedience" to analyze the dynamic process taking place in the church hierarchy in Barebester diocese. Then "exchange seek analysis" is utilized to explain the determinants of power differential among the characters. Through the lens of Network Exchange theory, it is possible for readers to look into the myth of the power relations in the novel, which are invisible to the untutored eye.
