Since World War II, the identity of the ethnic Chinese group has been a focal problem during the construction of nation-state in Southeast Asia. In the process of building modem state-nation countries with national integration in Southeast Asia, the status of ethnic Chinese group has converted from "Overseas Chinese" to "Chinese Diaspora", then into "Ethnic Chinese Group". These are not only changes of label, more importantly, the re-position of their political identity and cultural identity. This article depicts the difficulties the ethnic Chinese have encountered through the conversion of identities, and analyzes the reasons by using the theory of construction of nation-state. Also, combinated with the relationship between Southeast Asian countries and China, it explores the new changes of the Ethnic Chinese group's identity in the tide of globalization.
