LIANG Shi-qiu＇s translation of the Complete Works of Shakespeare takes an important position in modern Chinese translation history and Shakespeare research history.LIANG Shi-qiu＇s translation has a close connection with HU Shi.As the sponsor,HU Shi promoted the task actively and showed great concern on Liang＇s translation.He suggested that the translator take the source culture as the base and use foreignizing as the main focus.HU Shi formulated a detailed translation program and gave the specific instructions as well.Some proposals,such as adoption of the style and use of the notes are not totally consistent between HU and LIANG.The translation requirements of the sponsor play an important role on the translator＇s translation aim and strategy.
