Different from the explosive development of Hainan and Shenzhen,future development in the west of China will be a marathon instead of a sprint to the finish.It will be endurance,not speed that will be the key to success. Today,Chongqing,Xi'an and Chengdu are designing new labels for themselves. What will really determine their position in the next decade will not be dazzling numbers,but whether they can properly handle three problems distinctive to the west of China:the ability to enrich the people and promote coordination between urban and rural areas,finding the right role for industries in the area,and how to stimulate the vitality of private enterprises.
