To Promote Music Development by Fostering Music Criticism A Speech at the 4^(th) Annual Meeting of the China Music Criticism Society

摘要 各位领导、各位老师、各位同学大家好: 首先我代表中国音乐家协会理论委员会和中国音乐家协会音乐评论学会,向对我们本次年会给予支持的浙江省文化厅、教育厅、浙江省音乐家协会表示感谢,特别是对承办这次年会、做了大量工作的浙江艺术职业学院表示感谢。 For the past six years since the establishment of the Music Criticism Society,it has undergone a healthy development in general.We have constantly been asking ourselves these questions:how should we build up a good organization? What is the main body or structure within the society? I am personally not in favour of the way of criticizing others in a-cademic circles by using weapons,as we did to music criticism during the so-called ″Cultural Revolution″.In essence,music criticism or music review is supposed to safeguard the prosperity of music causes and to encourage music develop-ment.Even though there are some problems to be solved,or some music phenomena,music composition,music perfor-mance or public music life is being criticized in some way,the main purpose after all is to advance music development.Un-der any circumstances,therefore,we should pay attention to,take good care of and well protect musicians,especially the young ones.Once the organization of music criticism or music review is set up,it has to carry out the mission of assessing or criti-cizing various music phenomena in our society.It is important to note that music criticism or music review is not intended to castigate others,but rather,is aimed at positive assessment.How should we evaluate a musical work,or a concert show,or a music phenomenon? It is critical to judge its historical position,or its impact or special influence upon current music development,or even some of their characteristics that have overpassed the traditions,the past generations or current mu-sic phenomena.It is thus more important to recognize it than to criticize it.To recognize it,one is telling others what is good,or what deserves encouragement,which gives impetus to the development of music history.Yet certainly,it is also our duty to give severe criticism to those harmful phenomena in music creation,performance and social music life.In fact,academically,there is no absolutely correct opinion or ultimate end.The purpose or the starting point of academic research is to advance academic research in a con-stant way,rather than to just prove who is correct.It is true that during the process of argumentation,we do need a certain kind of spirit to justify our opinion.Nevertheless,your opinion is not always perfect.Academic research is developing for ever,for otherwise there should not have been so many different schools of thoughts and theories.For instance,in the field of aesthetics,there has been controversy for dozens of years,and who is now able to judge who is right or wrong.No one can.Because this is academic research,and because of controversy,the disciplinary construction in the aesthetic field can move forward to achieve academic results.Academic research is not necessarily pragmatic.It is always invisible,or is a certain spirit or wealth.Sometimes we take academic re-search as useless,and may have narrow understanding of it.As a matter of fact,academic research is not something practically useful,which requires our broad understanding.Nei-ther is music criticism,the most important purpose of which is to ultimately promote our social music life.
