In the history of literature tragedy has been developing as times go on. Heroes of modern tragedies are often ordinary people who will lead us to think over our society. The novel Indignation by Philip Roth is truly a modern tragedy in which the hero' s conflicts with others and society not only construct the body of the tragedy but express the hero's tragic character. Tragic consciousness is the precondition for creative writing, which in Indignation is mainly manifested in fatalism, self-consciousness and paradox and its profound meaning is that war is the essential reason of the tragedy. The tragic consciousness is continuity and echo of the Holocaust in Roth's mind and also related to Roth's anxiety.
