Red Rose and White Rose is one of the most popular novels by Zhang Ailing. The novelist describes the secret mentality and complex of ordinary human being with finely and subtly detailed writing, narrating people＇ s emotions, and marriage life during the period around 1930s to 1940s when the oriental culture encountered the western culture, and her writing also reveals the apparently inevitable feminine tragedy in a man-dominating society when the traditional is mingled with the modern. Zhang Ailing always had a doubtful and pessimistic attitude to whether females could alter their social status, therefore all of the female characters in her writing lead ordinary but still confused, helpless and bleak lives. Red Rose is pretty and amorous. White Rose is pure at heart. But when faced with impersonal reality, females all suffer endless helplessness, unable to retain their purity, yet unable to be passionate for ever. They are seeking serenity in instability, seeking satisfaction in dissatisfaction, and tolerating a- gainst the intolerable. The happiness of marriage and family rub shoulder with them and what is left behind them is nothing but bleakness.
