The Sheltering Sky tells the story of an American couple who travel in North Africa just after World War Ⅱ,but the Africa here is no longer the legendary Utopia but rather proves to be indifferent and absurd. The paper aims to take an existentialist approach to Kit’s existential struggle and her journey of self-deceit and degradation in the African desert, and to interpret the implied existentialist themes of freedom and responsibility and self-deceit.
