Comparison between Two English Versions of Chapters of A Dream of Red Mansions from Communicative and Semantic Translation Approaches

英国翻译理论家纽马克所提出的"语义翻译"和"交际翻译"理论是两种基本的翻译方法。语义翻译较客观,讲究准确性,屈从原语文化和原作者;而交际翻译较主观,只注重译文读者的反应,使原语屈从译语和译语文化,不给译文读者留下任何疑点与晦涩难懂之处。杨宪益和霍克斯的两个《红楼梦》英译本,从纽马克所提出的"语义翻译"和"交际翻译"的理论出发,各自运用了语义翻译和交际翻译方法,对比分析《红楼梦》章回目录翻译,可认识和解释这两种翻译现象。

Communicative translation and semantic translation are two basic translation methods proposed by translator Peter Newmark.Semantic translation focuses on objectivity and accuracy and is its original writer-centered;while communicative translation is subjective and translator-centered.The two translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions given by Yang Xian-yi and David Hawkes represent two translation strategies and embody the semantic translation and communicative translation theory proposed by translator Peter Newmark.By analyzing the translation of chapters of A Dream of Red Mansions,the article discusses these two translation phenomena.
