Contrastive Analysis of Nominalization in Chinese and English

以系统功能语法理论体系为理论基础,系统对比英汉语中名词化隐喻现象后得出结论:名词化隐喻在英汉两种语言中都普遍存在,区别在于实现方式不同。英语具有构词形态,常常可以通过各种方式添加词缀隐喻化为名词;汉语是通过改变句法功能来实现,词本身形式没有发生任何变化,这与英语属屈折语而汉语属孤立语相一致。另外,名词化隐喻在英汉语中的实现方式虽然不同,但所体现的隐喻性思维是一致的,并且都具有使得语篇简洁、衔接、客观的功能。

Based on the theory of the Systemic Functional Grammar,the paper compares nominalization in Chinese and English and concludes that nominalization exists pervasively both in Chinese and in English but differs in the way of realization.In English,nominalization is realized through adding affixes while in Chinese through the change of the syntactic function,which is consistent with the fact that English belongs to inflecting language while Chinese belongs to isolating language.In addition,nominalization in both languages reflects the same metaphorical thinking and both provides texts with the functions of being concise, coherent and objective.
