Women occupy an important position in Le Clézio's works. In one of his representative works Seeking Gold, three women, who are mother, sister and an indigenous girl Umma, are closely linked with the ocean. These three women are respectively the symbols of various levels of nature. The narrator's conception of women and his interpretation of nature bespeak a similar eco-feminist view of a non-dualistic world. However, the author's male narrative discourse is neither a so-called narrative voice consisting of oppression or distortion, nor promotion of feminism. Different narrative strategies concerning the three women's experience reveal Le Cl zio's critique on the civilized society as a mainstream intellectual.
