Paradox is essentially an idea or belief beyond the current belief. Since Brooks declared 'the language of poetry is the language of paradox', paradox has been widely accepted as a key term of New Criticism. However, in contemporary western criticism, paradox has been developed into various aspects both in literary theory and critical practice. This essay starts from the essential senses of paradox, introducing the significance of paradox studies in the aspects of ontology, epistemology, and methodology.
