Since the time of its birth, the sonnet has survived the vicissitudes of literary taste and the succession of literary movements and poetic schools, and still there is no trace of its fading into obscurity. The sonnet has always retained its integrity as a unique poetic form, although it has evolved from a form that followed strict metrical rules and had courtly love as its major subject to a form that has all kinds of variations and can be applicable to any subject. This phenomenon itself is worth investigating. This article traces the origin and evolution of the sonnet, with the emphasis on its history and modern development in the English language, and it also touches upon the reception of the sonnet in China.
