The author establishes a mechanical model for the steel reinforeing segments of the rabbet sealing element in a hydraulic spherical blowout preventer, determines the high stress region in the reinforcing segments by load analysis and finite element calculation. These lay a foundation for the optimization and the iso-strength calculation of the segments.
