Living during the period between the late 18th century and the early 19th century, Jane Austen was one of the first famous realistic novelists of her time, and has created six novels, in which Emma was considered the most representative one. This novel is about growth of the heroine, Emma, from callowness to maturity during which Mr. Knighfley has played an important role. He guides her to maturity by genuinely pointing out her flaws and helping her to overcome them. Most importantly, he serves as the mouthpiece for Jane Austen. He stands for Austen＇ s points of view on criticizing the manners and moral values of the upper class in Highbury society. This paper is to explore these functions Mr. Knightley performs in this novel.
