摘要
"Going out at midnight;climbing one mountain after another; finding water at dawn, and returning home at dusk."Those are the lyrics to a popular folk song in the mountainous area of northwestern China. The words vividly describe the hardships locals endure as they fetch drinking water. In an effort to both solve the water shortage and help women escape poverty, the China Women’s Development Foundation(CWDF) implemented"Land of Love,Water Cellar for Mothers,"a project supervised by the All-China Women’s Federation(ACWF).The project collects donations from all segments of society and then uses the money to build water cellars for mothers. Those water cellars collect rainwater, which families can use for their basic needs. The project was implemented 10 years ago.By the end of 2009, CWDF had allocated more than 400 million yuan(US $59 million), built 120,000 water cellars and 1,300 small centralized water-supply facilities, and benefited 1.6 million people in 23 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
