Since start-2003,the Chinese owned fleet has grown 141.1%, causing the Chinese share of the world fleet to grow from 5.7% to 8.1%. As of July 2010, the Chinese fleet comprised 2,815 vessels of 67.5m GT. China’s fleet is dominated by bulkers, which total 1,181 vessels of 39.4m GT, accounting for 58.3% of China’s fleet. However, since Chinese iron ore imports started to decline in March, the dry bulk earnings have fallen to $15,381/day in June. Meanwhile, Beijing has been asking banks to control lending, to prevent a property bubble. All these factors are likely to put pressure on Chinese ordering. Given that 43% of China’s dry bulk fleet were built by domestic yards, if low earnings persist, it could become somewhat harder in the short term for Chinese shipyards to secure new contracts from the key domestic component of their customer base.
