玛格丽特·德拉布尔,英国当代女作家。《夏季的鸟笼》是她的处女作,小说通过主人公撒拉对周遭已婚和未婚的亲戚、朋友的生活的观察与思考,反映了二十世纪六十年代英国的知识女性在追求自我实现和婚姻家庭生活时所面临的困境。在小说中,德拉布尔运用了大量的象征,通过使用自然界中具体的物来象征人物,揭示女性命运,本文试图分析这些物的象征意义来表现主题。

Margaret Drabble,a contemporary British woman writer.A Summer Bird-Cage is her first effort in writing,the novel is about the heroine--Sarah's observation and thoughts on the life of her relatives and friends,married or single,it reflects the dilemma of English women intellectuals when they pursue self-realization and marriage life in the 1960s.In the novel,Margaret Drabble uses a lot of symbols to symbolize her characters to find out the root of women's doom.The present paper tries to make an analysis of these symbols to show the theme.
