19世纪末20世纪初,天主教会两度公然将法国公立初等学校使用的部分教科书列为禁书,挑起波及全国的"教科书战争"。这两场战争既彰显了教科书在当时所具有的重要的思想政治宣传功能,又暴露了天主教会欲恢复其在初等教育领域的垄断地位的企图,同时也凸显了法兰西共和政府坚持世俗化学校的决心。
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,the French Catholic Church enrolled twice on the Index some textbooks used in the public primary schools and provoked nationwide wars of textbook. The two wars showed the important role played by textbooks in ideological and political propaganda,and exposed the ambition of the Catholic Church to restore its control over the primary education. During the wars the French republic government displayed its determination to laicize the public schools.
