A Down-to-Earth Conception,an Innovative Theory——On Professor CAO Ming-lun's Differentiation between "Textual Purpose" and "Non-Textual Purpose" in Translation

曹明伦教授在其新作《翻译之道:理论与实践》中首次界定并区分了翻译的"文本目的"与"非文本目的",以二元划分结束了对翻译目的之认识的多元化格局,廓清了认识,统一了思想,使我们对翻译目的的认识达到了一个新的高度,对译学界重新明确翻译的本质属性、界定译者的根本任务、规范译者的基本行为和保持翻译学的学科特点、避免学科危机有着十分重大的理论意义。

In his lately published monograph,The Way of Translation： Theory and Practice,Professor CAO Ming-lun for the first time in the field of translation studies defined and distinguished between ＂textual purpose＂ and ＂non-textual purposes＂.This binary classification ended diversified interpretations,clarified misunderstandings and enabled us to reach a consensus on translation purposes.With an enhanced understanding of translation purposes,the academic circles of translation studies can more accurately define the nature of translation,the fundamental task of the translator and the code of conduct regulating his behavior.What＇s more,an enhanced understanding in this regard is of great significance for the efforts to maintain the disciplinary features of translation studies and to save it from a disciplinary crisis.
