There are three potential mentalities behind Wang Meng＇s later novel writings.They are the mentality of a wise man,the mentality of an elder man and that of a historian.The mentality of a wise man lowers his spiritual level as an intellectual;the mentality of an elder man makes him understand thoroughly the sadness from the lack of mutual understanding between generations;while the mentality of a historian embarrasses his writings.These three mentalities constitute a set of mature attitude structures in his later life,which manipulate and restrict the discourse and narration of his novels.
