Metaphor and metonymy have long been simply regarded as two distinct figurative modes, and only since 1980s,they began to be equated with two basic cognitive ways for people to know this world, with a fundamental role in the process of conceptualization. And the interrelationship between the two is extensively explored by worldwide cognitive scholars henceforth. This paper explores this interrelationship and interaction based on expressions with "ear".Their evolution well proves the metonymy-metaphor continuum with no clear-cut boundaries in between.Besides this fuzziness and continuum, metonymy is more cognitively basic than metaphor to a certain extent.
