从带有情感色彩的原初状态,到逐渐概念化为某种具体情绪,这一短暂历程并不是随意自由发展的,而是有一条主线可以追逐,那就是核心情绪。从神经生物学角度讲,核心情绪是一种神经生理状态;从认知心理学角度讲,核心情绪是对神经生理活动信息的心理表征或心理图式。因而核心情绪的测量方法也分为两大类,其一是自我报告测量,另一种是生理指标测量。
