On Beijing-Style Novels in China

京味小说实际是北京市井味小说,其京味在于以独特的京味语言描绘出北京的文化景观、文化风俗和文化性格。京味小说萌生于清末民初的北京报人白话小说;20世纪20年代以来,老舍从文化景观、文化风俗和文化性格诸方面对北京四合院文化进行了深刻揭示,标志着京味小说的真正诞生。20世纪80年代初,第二代的邓友梅、刘心武、陈建功等继承发展了老舍的四合院文学;80年代中后期以来,第三代的王朔等以大院文化视角描写北京市井生活,开辟了京味小说的新生面。

Saturated with the daily-life colors of Beijing City,Beijing-style novels are characterized by their depictions of the cultural sight,custom and character of the city with a language style featuring the local dialect.Such novels,rising in the modern-Chinese novels written by newspaper columnists in Beijing during the first score of the 20th century,took shape thanks to the great contributions of Lao She（1899-1966）,who has been dedicated to the description of the residential-quadrangle culture of Beijing since the 1920s.The early 1980s witnessed the inheritance of Lao She＇s work by the second-generation writers of Beijing-style novels including Deng Youmei（1931-）,Liu Xinwu（1942-）and Chen Jiangong（1949-）.Then from the middle and late 1980s on,the courtyard-culture perspective of daily life in Beijing,represented by Wang Shuo（1958-）and other third-generation writers,has blazed a new trail for the development of Beijing-style novels.
