老舍的《猫城记》一直以来都是一部有争议的作品。历史上对《猫城记》的评价也多从艺术上、思想上予以否定,现在的研究多着眼于重新评价上。《猫城记》可以说是比较完整地反映了老舍早期的文化批判观念的作品,在这部作品中,他批判了国民的劣根性和封建传统文化,并在文化批判的基础上进行了反思。

A Tale of Cat City has always been regarded as a controversial work in Lao She＇s novels. Comments on A Tale of Cat City were mainly focused on denying the novel from the perspectives of artistry and ideological contents in the past. And present studies on the novel are mainly focused on the re-evaluation of the novel. Lao She＇s view of cultural criticism in his early period was embodied relatively intact in A Tale of Cat City. In the novel, Lao She criticized Chinese citizen＇s inherent weaknesses and feudal traditional culture and carried on reflection on the basis of cultural criticism.
