Highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) extended the life expectancy of AIDS patients, but the side effect of causing metabolic syndrome increased the risk to cardiovascular disease(CVD).However, studies in recent years have found, interruption of HAART treatment does not reduce this risk, and a high incidence of cardiovascular disease is also reported in antiretroviral-naive HIV patients. In order to analyze the mechanism of susceptibility of HIV patients to CVD,this paper reviews the recent literature in the light of lipid abnormalities, immune dysfunction, inflammation and thrombosis-related factors activation and vascular injury.
