A joint venture led by China Unicorn (中国联通), China's second-largest telecommunication operator, has gotten approval from authorities in Nigeria to acquire a 75% stake in Nigerian Telecommunications (Nitel) for USD 2.5 billion. The other two companies in the JV are Dubai's Minerva and Nigeria's GiCell Wireless. The deal is China Unicom's first foray into the overseas telecommunication market Nitel has a monopoly on the telecom market in Nigeria, one of the fastest-growing telecommunication markets in the world.
