The working principle of automatic transmission was introduced, its limitations for only using brake and clutch were analyzed. Furthermore, the structure principle of one-way clutch was introduced. Taking the structure principle of a typical 4-speed automatic transmission for example, how to couple one-way clutch with clutch or brake for overcoming functional limitations, as well as realizing the following functions： downhill engine brake, sliding at parking and reducing impact during shifting was demonstrated.
