There were 50 years passed since the definition of transient ischemic attack (TIA) was first established in 1950s. The traditional concepts of TIA have considerably changed with the improvement of clinical studies and the advance of neu- roimaging techniques. In June, 2009, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association published a new guideline which considers that TIA is a transient episode of neurological dysfunction caused by brain, spinal cord or focal retinal is- chemia, without the evidence of acute infarction. This article will review the evolution of TIA's concept and take some dis- cussion on the clinical significance of new definition.
