This paper systematically analyses Walter Benjamin's views about "original text and translated text," "translatability," and "fidelity" expressed in his The Task of the Translator. His theory denies the subjectivity of reader and points out that the translated text is not the absolute equivalence to the original one.He also argues that the translated text has an equal position with the original one, which has a strong impact on the traditional translation theory that holds to the fidelity principle and the "priority of the original," while laying a theoretical ground for the deconstructive translation theory.Benjamin's theory provides a new perspective for reconsidering translation theory per se and translation practice.
