ON THE THEMES OF SHAKESPEARE AND TANG XIANZU’S PLAYS

莎士比亚与汤显祖作为16-17世纪东西方戏剧的杰出代表,在主题选择上不谋而合,都突出表现了爱情至上、嫉妒、贪婪及追求和谐的主题。但相同的主题由于两位剧作家的主观命意及其作品的客观意蕴之间的距离,作品题材本身的流变给主题带来的限定和变化,作品产生的时代背景对主题的规定性意义等因素的影响又有所不同。本文拟对此进行探讨。

As the most outstanding representatives of Eastern and Western players in the 16-17th century,Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu have something in common when selecting the themes of their plays.They both express the theme of love,the theme of evil,the theme of greedy and the pursue of harmony successfully.But for the same themes,there are some differences between them because of their different subjective purposes,the objective connotation of their works,the limitation and changes of these themes owe to the changes of materials,the different social background and so on.This essay will analyze their themes,aiming to explore the commons and dfferences in Eastern and Western literature and culture.
