Focalizing "The Otherness":An Analysis of Characterization in Dry September

福克纳在其杰出的短篇小说《干旱的九月》中显示了高超的叙事技巧,他针对不同人物采取不同的聚焦模式,对人物性格、命运的描述趋于完美。其中对女主人公明妮.库珀小姐采用多层外聚焦、内聚焦相结合的手法,不但使对明妮小姐的形象刻画更为深刻,揭示了南方淑女神话的"他者"本质,还拉近了读者与人物的距离,使小说的主题变得复杂、多重和深化。

In his short story ＂Dry September＂, William Faulkner demonstrates remarkable narrative tech- niques. He uses different modes of focalization for different characters, presenting perfect delineation of the characters＇ personality and fate. Among others, muhilayered internal and external focalizations are adopted in the characterization of the female protagonist Miss Minnie Cooper. That not only makes it possible for the writer to probe deep into the character of Miss Minnie and the otherness underlying the southern Womanhood but also draws the reader closer to the character. Consequently, the theme of the story becomes complicated, multifold and deepened.
