We identify several areas of convergence in the reform curricula of China and several of its economic partners. We explain these features in terms of rapid changes in the respective economies, their impact on labor market and consequently on school education. In the national curriculum documents of China, Australia and the USA we observe two common threads: a clear focus on the development of statistical thinking in the first nine/ten years of basic education, and a move to develop closer links in the same period of schooling between the study of number and number operations and the development of algebraic thinking. These are explained in terms of a common commitment to a high level of mathematical literacy for all students.
