An Economic Survey of Publication Activities in the Song Dynasty

本文通过对若干刻书个案成本的考察,估算宋代刻印文集所需资金。对照一般文人士大夫的俸禄和支出情况,说明他们普遍无力刊印自己的文集。宋人大部分文集的刊成,都是通过官府的资助实现的。

This essay evaluates the cost of publication in Song Dynasty by looking into several cases where individuals managed to have their works published.Taking into consideration the salaries and expenses of ordinary scholars and literati at the time,the survey concludes that they generally could not afford to publish their works and most of the Song Dynasty publications would have been impossible without the financial support of the government.
