As a re-writing or back-writing version of The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe by Danial Defoe,J.M.Coetzee's Foe reflects the dilemma of postcolonial representation both in form and content. The novel attempts to empower itself by imitating the Western literary canon and,on the other hand, tries to use the totemic figure Crusoe to explore the South African context.Coetzee's efforts to represent"the marginal"differently from the way they have been represented within the dominant discourse reveal the complicated interaction between the postcolonial text and the imperial pre-text in which "complicity and antagonism","imitation and subversion"are bound together.
