五行观念的流行即是把世界看作是一个整体,其基本元素金、木、水、火、土相互结合产生了万事万物,组成了这个完整的世界。天上、地下、人间以及自然界都有五行的存在,它们之间相互发生作用,相互影响。这在小说《西游记》中更是得到了充分的体现。其不仅存在于孙悟空的成长中,存在于取经五人众之间,也存在于妖魔的世界中,这就是五行观念在《西游记》中的体现。
