Reflections on Systemic Functional Linguistics

本文首先根据Halliday近年来的有关论述,解读系统功能语言学作为"适用语言学"的内涵;然后在此基础之上提出把系统功能语言学视为三个不同而又相互联系的研究区域,即理论、应用和实践,并举例说明各区域的特点、价值和相互关系;最后指出各区域内有待加强的地方及发展方向。本文旨在强调,在研究系统功能语言学的过程中,有必要不断深入认识理论本身及其发展,以便找准研究的方向和轨道,提高研究水平并增强创新性。

The paper makes an attempt to decode Systemic Functional Linguistics （SFL） as an ＂appliable＂ linguistics, and based on its proposes to view SFL as composed of three distinct but interrelated areas of research, i.e. theoretical SFL, applied SFL and practical SFL. It discusses the characteristics and values of each area, the relationships among the areas, and a number of weaknesses in each area along with directions for future endeavors. The paper is meant to stress the importance of reflecting upon both its basic framework and new developments while doing research in SFL, so that every effort made is clearly orientated as well as on the right track.
