民国期刊的时代表达与转型期学人的学术选择——以《学衡》与吴宓的关联为例

《学衡》与吴宓的学术道路紧密相连,《学衡》的主张正是吴宓的学术追求。而这份杂志从创办到停刊却恰恰表现了吴宓学术选择的两难:一方面,《学衡》成为宣传以白壁德(Irving Babbitt)为代表的美国新人文主义的主要阵地,该杂志还针对国内学界的趋向,从多层面多角度行使其"批评之职事";另一方面,在日记中吴宓记述了自己的学术理念:并未像《学衡》杂志简单选择的所谓"rational-critical"那样,而是有着更多的紧张和焦虑。这种学术选择的两难也从某种程度映射出整个知识分子群体在近代转型期的心理状态。

The Journal of Critical Review is closely related to the academic road of Wu Mi,whose academic pursuit is consistent with the tenet the journal advocated.The starting and the terminating of the journal is the exact manifestation of Wu Mi＇s dilemma in academic choice：on the one hand,The Journal of Critical Review became the forefront in publicizing the new humanistic ideas represented by Irving Babbitt,and functioned as the critic of the unhealthy tendencies in Chinese academic circle;on the other hand,Wu Mi expressed in his diary his academic philosophy that is characteristic of anxiety and unease,unlike that of being Rational-critical in The Journal of Critical Review.This kind of dilemma in the academic choice reflects,to some extent,the psychological state of the intelligentsia during the transitional period of China.
