The issue of food safety in developing countries is urgent and complicated. Indigenous knowledge plays an unique role in food safety because it is the basic way of food supply, the soil of agricultural innovation, the social capital of the poor and the foundation of global food diversity. Poverty reduction functions of indigenous knowledge should be understood and used in developing countries to ensure the food safety.
