According to Cognitive Linguistics, our mind is inherently embodied, and our conceptual system is fundamentally metaphorical. This paper explores four mouth organs in Chinese and English idioms. It is found that, despite the cognitive and cultural preference, most of the mouth organ idioms are mapped onto the domains which are closely related to our daily life yet rather abstract. Metonymy plays a more important role than metaphor in the construction of the conceptual system of mouth organs in the idioms, but these two are also interwoven in some cases.
