Selenoproteins contain a typical amino acid selenocysteine, which is co translationally incorporated into polypeptide chain at UGA codons in the coding region of selenoprotein mRNA. It was proved that selenocysteine is synthesized from serine and active selenium donor. The decoding of UGA as selenocysteine requires a unique tRNA, some proteins, and special secondary structure in the mRNA.
