《铁木前传》是孙犁继《荷花淀》之后最为人称誉的作品,被视为"十七年文学"的经典之作。自问世以来,人们对其主题和意旨的探讨几乎从未停止,其多义而敞开的品格不断召唤着人们的阐释冲动。事实上,它是孙犁无法写竣的半部书,从中可以看出,作者在对当时时代的认知与自身的美学追求之间存在某种错位,以致小说的主题意蕴表现出明显的多义性。

Of the Carpenter and the Blacksmith was a great novel behind Lotus Lake, and among the novels written between 1949 and 1966, it could be considered as a classic one. After it was published, due to its ambiguity and openness, readers kept approaching its theme. In fact, it was an un- finished work, from which we can see the contradiction between his aesthetic and his understanding towards the time. And it is the contradiction that endows his work with the ambiguity.
