Objective To investigate the effect of different-time transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) against chronic sports fatigue and on the morphology and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) content of hippocampus and hypothalamus in rats. Methods A rat model of chronic sports fatigue was made by 8-week load increment platform exercises. From the sixth week, TEAS was given immediately and 3 hrs after the exercise. Rat point Zusanli was stimulated using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator. The treatment lasted 2 weeks. Rat hippocampal and hypothalamic morphology and 5-HT expressions were examined by HE staining and immunohistochemical method, respectively. Results TEAS could significantly reduce the morphological injury to and the 5-HT expressions of rat hippocampus and hypothalamus. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups treated immediately and 3 hrs after the exercise respectively. Conclusions TEAS functions to promote the recovery from fatigue and improve the motor ability. TEAS reducing rat chronic sports fatigue is related to its decreasing central 5-HT expressions and neurocyte injuries.
