Time,Space and Contexts:The Three Dimensions of Gender Equality in China

本文通过整合时间、空间、情境三维因素,构建具有中国特色的、多维度、多层次的两性平等的理论分析框架,系统解读维系性别不平等的显性和潜在的文化、社会及制度机制,深入发掘不利于两性平等发展的多层次且错综复杂的内在原因。生命历程属私人领域,但其发展轨迹受制于私人领域和公共空间中的各种事件,并在不同时间与多种情境因素交结和互动。同时,通过突出事件之间、个体之间、群体之间、政策之间、公域与私域之间的连接,本文还反思了过去60年(尤其是改革开放以来)两性平等事业发展过程中的障碍,旨在为政府协调、调整、制定相关的公共政策、措施、法律或法规提供进一步的理论支持。

By integrating time, space and context and taking into account the unique settings of China, this paper attempts to formulate a multilevel and multidimensional conceptual framework of gender inequality, and uses it to explore systematically the intertwined cul- tural, social and institutional factors, both tangible and intangible, that might be related to gender inequality in China. While the life course is of private issue, its trajectory is to a large extent shaped by events in public arenas, and intersects with time and social context. Meanwhile, by highlighting the interaction among events, individuals, groups and policies as well as the linkage between private and public arenas, this paper provides further reflections on the barriers for the improvement of gender equality over the past 60 years in China （particularly since 1978） in order to provide theoretical support for relevant government agencies to formulate, co-ordinate, and implement more efficient policies to enhance gender equality.
