霍布斯为了构建其公民哲学,借助了修辞学的方法。霍布斯曾经摇摆不定于修辞学和哲学之间,他后来认识到只有将雄辩和智慧、修辞与理性结合起来,才能构建其科学的公民哲学。霍布斯对古典修辞学采取的是反其道而用之的办法,即批判性继承的态度。

In order to construct his civil philosophy,Hobbes borrows the method of rhetoric.Hobbes once did hesitate between rhetoric and philosophy,but he finally realized that only by the combination of eloquence and wisdom,rhetoric and reason,was he able to construct his scientific civil philosophy.As to the classical rhetoric,the way Hobbes adopts is its other way around,that is,the attitude of critical inheritance.
